Last week our class at the Highland Park Library, Sparking Your Creative Self, reminded all of us of the importance of creative expression. This can look different for everyone. Just this morning I read a piece in the New York Times Magazine entitled “Morning Poems” and it once again reminded me of just how important our morning routines are. The writer talks about memorizing poems in the mornings instead of picking up the phone and scrolling. I love this idea. I use poetry often in my yoga classes and my husband recently gifted me “You are Here: Poetry in the Natural World” by various poets. It is a beautiful book that weaves the magic of nature into poetry.
Five years since the start of the pandemic, I now pay attention to novels and movies again. But I can also sit more with my thoughts. These days when I wait for a light to change, I sometimes feel overcome by my sheer luck; that I’m walking under a sunny sky, breathing fresh air, on my way to cook dinner with friends. In my idle mind, instead of defaulting to whatever demands my attention, I move toward a precise, generous beauty.
